Five young people from the Woori Yallock district have been given a boost as they start their first year of university with a scholarship from the Woori Yallock (Bendigo) Community Bank.
The students were presented with a $5000 cheque at a special scholarship presentation attended by family members and members of the bank board at Seville Hill Winery.
Tashara Brown, Katelyn Betts, Angus Mclean, Billie Osadczuk and Kaylah Fall will receive a further $5000 in 2018 as ongoing support for their university education.
Billie is studying Photography and Photo Imaging at RMIT University in Melbourne and will use some of her scholarship money to buy a camera and computer to aid in her studies.
Katelyn aims to return to Lilydale High School as a PE and maths teacher when she completes her studies, saying she wants to make a difference in the lives of students and have a positive impact on their community. She is studying Secondary Education at La Trobe University.
Tashara Brown is studying Commerce at Melbourne University.
As a long-term goal, Tashara said she had a desire to use her gained understanding to help others manage their capital and resources in such a way to maximise their welfare and quality of life.
Kaylah Fall is moving to Geelong to study Criminology and Psychological Science at Deakin University in Waurn Ponds. She has always loved psychology and listed among her career aspirations going into the police force to become an officer and working her way up to the homicide squad or the major crash unit.
Angus McLean, a volunteer with the Yellingbo CFA, is studing Bachelor of Paramedicine at the Australian Catholic University in Melbourne. He said he hoped to qualify as a paramedic in order to extend his skills and contribution in the emergency services.
Woori Yallock and District Community Bank chairman Peter Cownley congratulated each recipient on their achievements and aspirations and wished them success.
He also recognised the bank’s customers saying “ … it is because of you that we are able to help our local community in this way.”
