Ngaire Holman said a teary farewell to her extended playgroup family on 28 June after 11 years as leader.
And, as always, her husband and playgroup helper Alan was right by her side.
Surrounded by parents, grandparents and an excited clutch of playgroupers at the Warburton Christian Playgroup, Ngaire spoke of the original aims, saying with the support of the Seventh-day Adventist Church they kept the Christian connection, so families would know of their Christian philosophy.
“That is being loving, kind and welcoming of all who wanted to be part of our playgroup,” she said, adding that it had been rewarding to see that that philosophy had been accepted by so many families.
She said she looked forward every week to the two weekly playgroup sessions.
“I’ve been part of a wonderful community that hasn’t simply looked to its own needs, but has reached out and shared with others,” Ngaire said.
Sharing the joy of new births and marriages, and the sadness of death, but most of all watching so many children grow through their playgroup years had been a privilege, Ngaire said.
Ngaire thanked all the helpers and supporters including the Warburton/Yarra Junction Bendigo Bank, ADcare and Yarra Junction op shops, Yarra Ranges Council and Playgroup Victoria.
There was an especially heartfelt thanks for Alan.
“You have all seen how he keeps playgroup ticking along,” she said. “But what you don’t see is how he props me up and keeps me going.”
Kalli Blunt from Launching Place was one of many, from littlies to grown-ups, lining up for a farewell hug and a chance to say ‘thank you’.
“Ngaire has given so much of her time and commitment to the community, especially with the kids, but also with fund-raising, and always with kind words and many times a shoulder to cry on,” she said.
Wishing those taking over the reins good luck and the same warmth and support she and Alan had enjoyed over the years, she shared a final few words of wisdom.
“Love your families and they will love you.”
