Victoria Police took to social media this week for national road trip day on 26 May and cautioned the public to be prepared and drive safely on the roads.

123 lives have been lost on roads this year, with more than half of these happening on country roads.

Before hitting the open road, they gave the public a handy checklist to stay safe:

Plan your trip thoroughly, especially when driving on roads you are not familiar with.

Stay calm when travelling in traffic.

Obey the road rules – they are there to ensure that you and your friends arrive alive.

Allow extra space for essentials such as emergency fuel, a spare tyre (make sure it’s roadworthy) and a first aid kit.

Never get behind the wheel when tired, or after drinking or taking drugs.
