STICKERS have been distributed throughout the Yarra Ranges to encourage those going through tough times, to seek help instead of feeling isolated.
The Need to Chat sticker campaign was developed as part of Mental Health Week on 9 to 15 October, by Yarra Ranges Council’s Youth Reference Group.
The campaign aims to tackle, and raise awareness for depression and anxiety, two of the top issues facing young people across Australia today.
Stickers will appear in various locations including: Mooroolbark, Yarra Junction, Healesville, Belgrave and in languages such as English, Chin Haka, Chin Zomi and Karen.
Reference group member Tiffany Kuiper, of Lilydale, said the campaign also let people know that if they were feeling down, not to be ashamed.
“There is a lot of stigma around mental illness, and we hope these stickers will help people feel more at ease,” Ms Kuiper said.
The sticker depicts a young person stuck in a black hole, showing that there is a way out no matter how alone some people may feel.
Group member Genna Stott, of Wantirna, said the group wanted to develop a campaign other young people could identify with.
“The group brainstormed what it felt like to be dealing with these complicated thoughts, and it was clear that everyone shared the same feelings, so we wanted to translate it into our campaign,” Ms Stott said.
“Everyone feels these feelings differently, but being stuck in a black hole was something we could all agree on.
“I hope these stickers encourage young people to seek help if they need it, because I have seen through this group there are people out there to help.”
The sticker encourages young people to use resources through the council’s website.
