Yarra Junction Library is getting into the Christmas spirit by hosting a book giveaway for the month of December.
Library staff have created a Christmas tree from 24 children’s books that they plan to give away each day to preschool aged kids, much like an advent calendar.
Librarian Maria Mithen said, “We’ve got a Christmas tree made of wrapped up books… We’re thinking for the first day, it will be for the first child to come through the doors and then on the second day it will be the second child to come through and so on.
“But by 24 I think we’ll be guessing at that stage, but we’ll give it a go.
“The other thing we’re going to do is set up a Christmas tree and we’re going to collect unwrapped toys that we’re collecting for Vinnies…They will be put into hampers by our local Vinnies group.”
Ms Mithen said she welcomes locals to bring in new toys and second hand toys that are in perfect condition to help bring joy to children this holiday season.
The Yarra Junction library staff have also been busy putting together handbags filled with toiletries and sanitary products that will be sent overseas.
To those children who are looking to get their hands on a new book for Christmas, Ms Mithen says, “Come and visit us at Yarra Junction Library.”
