Light on Jewish holiday

By KATH GANNAWAY

AS THE only Jewish pre-schooler in the Upper Yarra, Zoe Moria has something special to share with her playmates at the UYCH Children’s Centre kindergarten.
Zoe’s mum, Shlomit, is working with the staff and children as they learn about and celebrate Hanukkah.
The Jewish holiday is observed for eight days and nights, commemorating the re-dedication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the lights following the Jewish victory over oppressors in 165 BC.
UYCH kinder assistant Jade Muratore said the children have learnt a lot from activities with Shlomit and from other resources such as the Sesame Street programs dedicated to Hannakah with stories and songs.
She said they take it all in very well and love celebrating and learning about new things.
“They understand that everyone is different and that everyone celebrates different things and the reasons why,” she said.
“They learn respect for other people.”
Shlomit and husband Edo came to Australia 10 years ago and have lived in Warburton for eight years.
She introduced Hannakah to the centre when her son Dean attended and says Zoe is enjoying the same positive experience.
“It makes Zoe feel so proud.
“She knows it (Christmas) is something we don’t really do, but with this she feels special, and not left out,” she said.
“We are happy to celebrate the Christian holidays and people are happy to celebrate Hannakah with us as well,” she said.
Last year the children helped friends decorate their Christmas tree.
“I am happy for them to experience all that’s out there for them,” she said.
