The driver of the Mazda, a 35-year-old woman from Wandin East, received minor injuries and was taken by ambulance to the Maroondah Hospital.
The driver of the Toyota, a 38-year-old man from Lilydale, received serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital by ambulance. The Toyota caught fire at the scene but the fire was extinguished by a bystander.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
