Panthers prevail

THE weather was delightful on Saturday as the Yarra Valley Cricket Association round 4 was completed, the last of the scheduled one day rounds for the top senior grades until after the mid-season break.
In the DJ Strachan Shield, Mount Evelyn at home to the Yarra Panthers were dismissed for 151 with Andrew Giblin 37 and Adrian Bryans 22 being the main contributors.
For the Panthers, Rob Williams took 4 for 36 and Joseland 4 for 39 before the Yarra Panthers reached a match-winning score at the end of their 40 overs with 7 for 200cc.
Brendan Joseland 44, Dean Capobianco 34 not out were top scores, while Shane Luck 3 for 44 and Aaron Booth 2 for 48 were the wicket-takers for the home team.
At Woori Yallock, the home side batted first against Yarra Junction and made a good score of 6 for 200cc (Andrew Sharp 79, Mark Stolarczyil 31). Junction’s James Rogers took 2 for 21.
Following the tea adjournment, Yarra Junction went to the crease looking for the 5 runs an over required but were dismissed for only 134 (David Lever 42 runs). Danny Hyndman took 4 for 25 to give the Tigers a strong win.
The Wandin Cricket Ground was the venue for the match between Wandin and Silvan with the home side taking first use of the wicket and at the completion of their allotted 40 over innings were 7 for 195 (Scott Hasan 44 and Justin Mays 42). Silvan’s Crowehurst took 3 for 52.
Silvan chased well all innings but fell slightly short of the target when the last wicket fell with the score on 188 (John Lovell 80). Wayne Ross 4 for 36 and Gary Frankovic 4 for 28 were Wandin’s stars.
In a match that had the crowd on the edge of their seats at times, the home side Seville batted first and was dismissed for 122.
Andrew Kay made a fighting 53 while Julian Russell bowled well to lead the way for Healesville with 4 for 30, and was well supported by Alan Pearce with 3 for 14.
In reply, Healesville led by the flailing bat of Brian Horner (34) passed the Seville score to be 6/138 dec.
Rob Henderson was the leading bowler for Seville with 4 for 41.
Coldstream travelled to the Warburton and were dismissed for just 92.
Nathan Cuthbertson 37 and Liam Doughty 23 doing their very best while Luke Darwell 3 for 18 and Michael Walker 3 for 16 bowled well for the home team.
Chasing the total after tea Warburton-Millgrove reached 3 for 198 at innings close with John Heywood making a fine century with 108 not out and Brent Clinch 30.

NEXT Sunday, the South East Country Region travel to Central Highlands Region 3 to play the first round of the VCCL Under 21 Country Cup.
At the time of writing this report, the Region were having a trial match to select the final squad.
The match to be played at Darley on November 4 will commence at 10.30am.
Also the YVCA U18, U16 and U14 representative sides will take to the field.
The U18s will host FTGDCA at Gruyere while the U14s and U16s will travel to played the FTGDCA sides.
