Hunters’ group formed

THE Australian Deer Association was on target when they recognised the need for a branch in the eastern region of Victoria.
The Upper Goulburn branch of the ADA, formed late February, had a successful first meeting in Alexandra recently, with more than 30 deer hunting enthusiasts present.
Healesville resident and Upper Goulburn branch committee member Barry Allaway said the new ADA branch location was very convenient for hunters in the region.
He said members would no longer have to travel to the Western Port branch, previously the closest branch to the Yarra Ranges.
“We had to travel so far to go to Western Port,” Mr Allaway said.
“Instead of travelling all that way, we just have to go over the Black Spur.”
He said that meetings were social and educational, with members given the opportunity to hear a range of guest speakers and participate in education programs.
“The meetings are a get-together to talk about hunting, and it’s also an opportunity for young people or new hunters to participate in education programs,” he said.
“The great thing about it, I think, is the companionship, it’s a chance to sit down and talk to hunters about hunting.”
Upper Goulburn branch president Roger Wootton said that they would also run several family camps and sponsor a member to complete an ADA hunter education course.
The Upper Goulburn branch will meet bi-monthly, and the next meeting will be held at 8pm on Tuesday 20 April, at the Continuing Education and Arts Centre of Alexandra.
New members and existing hunters are welcome.
