Warburton gets home, just

By Carli Mitchell
WARBURTON Millgrove hosted last year’s competition runners-up, Gembrook Cockatoo, on Saturday in the Division One seniors of the YVMDFL in a game full of surprises. The home side was ready to prove its worth and the first quarter was relatively close. But Warburton blew Gembrook out of the blocks in the second quarter with seven goals to one. It gave Warburton a good lead but it was just as well because Gembrook hit back hard to lose the match by only four points.

The first quarter of the Wandin-Mount Evelyn game saw the home side just about kick itself out of the match with 1.7.
This set the tone for the rest of the game, with Mount Evelyn making Wandin pay for its inaccuracy. By half-time the visitors were leading by almost four goals and the margin only grew from there.

The rest of the match saw Warburton Millgrove trailing, with Andrew Moore and David McPherson starring for Gembrook. As they say, there is always room for improvement. In its opening match against Woori Yallock, Monbulk simply couldn’t get its hands on the ball or get anywhere near their goals. Woori Yallock, on the other hand, played a great game and Monbulk was on the receiving end of a 51-point beating.

From the first bounce the Wandin-Mount Evelyn game was close, and at no point during the match was the margin more than a goal or two. What cost Mount Evelyn in the end was its accuracy – seven goals from 17 shots. Wandin was a little more accurate but it was its ball use that ultimately got it over the line.
