RSPCA at ‘Catpacity,’ lowering adoption costs

Cat adoption prices will be dropped between Friday 22 April and Sunday 24 April.

RSPCA Victoria will reduce the adoption price of adult cats to just $29 as part of its ‘Catpacity’ adoption promotion from Friday 22 April to Sunday 24 April to coincide with the last three days of the school holidays.

With more than 700 cats currently in care across the state, RSPCA Victoria is keen to find loving new homes for as many as possible.

Currently its shelters are overrun with felines needing vet treatment, foster care and adoption – in fact, the number of cats at RSPCA has increased by 65% compared with April 2020, when adoptions were booming with people welcoming a new pet into the family during lockdowns.

Head of Operations at RSPCA Victoria Tanya Drakopoulos, said online applications for pets had slowed this year, creating pressure on RSPCA teams to find homes for many of the animals in their care.

“We’re literally struggling to find pens for cats arriving at our animal care centres every day. Because we are an open shelter and would never turn a cat away, we really need to find homes for our adoption ready animals to create more space,” Ms Drakopoulos said.

“We saw really pleasing rates of adoptions during lockdowns, but now that has slowed right down. As life gets back to normal, now is not the time to forget about vulnerable animals. We urge those thinking about getting a new cat to act now and choose to adopt from an RSPCA Victoria shelter.”

Potential adopters can visit their local RSPCA shelter without an appointment during the three day ‘Capacity’ campaign, and for just $29, all cats come microchipped, desexed, vaccinated, and behaviour and health checked.

“Despite the low adoption price, our experienced teams will follow the same careful process to ensure every adoption placement is the right decision for the animal and their new owner. We take the time to understand your lifestyle and match you with a cat to ensure a long and happy life together.”

RSPCA Victoria cares for over 8,000 cats and kittens across its six shelters every year. Adoption promotions help those considering getting a new pet make the decision at the right time.

The ‘Catpacity’ adoption promotion is also available at participating Petbarn stores. Kittens will remain at full price but still need loving homes, so RSPCA Victoria encourages people to consider adopting a kitten.
