‘SORRY’ was the word that had the nation at a standstill on 13 February 2008 when Prime Minister Kevin Rudd apologised to the ‘Stolen Generation’.
A commemoration of this historic event will be held at Lillydale Lake at 10.30am, hosted by the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
The morning tea will include a talk from local Aboriginal community elder Aunty Dot Peters on her connection to Coranderrk.
The Coranderrk episode of ‘the First Australians’ will be played, followed by the DVD of the apology to the ‘Stolen Generation’.
Last year on 13 February almost 100 people, including politicians and Aboriginal community elders, attended a breakfast at Swinburne’s Lilydale campus to watch the “sorry speech” from the Prime Minister and the Opposition Leader.
Indigenous liaison officer of MEGT Lea Jones said while the ‘Stolen Generation’ wasn’t something that affected her directly the day represented acknowledgment and recognition of what occurred.
“It’s still important to us. We haven’t lived through it, as such, but it is still part of our history,” Lea Jones said.
The one-year commemoration of the Prime Minister’s apology will be held at Lillydale Lake Community Room Friday 12 February at 10.30am.
