MACCLESFIELD 15-year-old Monique Brown was in Year 7 when she was introduced to sports aerobics.
By 2009, she had placed first at the national titles as part of a level one trio and she still hadn’t joined a recognised club.
Now, she trains for nine hours per week, 52 weeks per year.
And as competitions wrapped up for 2011 last October, her focus immediately switched to learning and mastering new choreography for her 2012 performances.
“Sports aerobics demonstrates creativity,” said Monique’s mother, Michelle.
“Performances are made up of dynamic strength, jumps, leaps, splits, leg kicks, push ups, balance and flexibility with many different movements and arm lines performed to music.”
Athletes’ performances are judged on artistic expression, execution, creativity and the difficulty of their routines.
Monique is a talented all-around sportsperson who takes a keen interest in horse riding as a member of Macclesfield Pony Club and competing on her horse Shirrine Park Blackwood.
At the state sports aerobics championship last August, Monique needed to reach a qualifying score to represent Victoria at the national titles to be held at the State Netball Hockey and Centre in October.
She placed second at state level and went on to win the national level three intermediate individual event.
Her sights are now firmly set on realising her dream of representing Australia at world championship level.
