Club upgrades are just ace

THE Mount Evelyn sports scene’s newest plaything is up and running at the Mount Evelyn Tennis Club.
The club’s Birmingham Road base is now home to two new synthetic courts to compliment its two existing en tout cas courts.
And the clubhouse has been fitted out with a new kitchen, new carpet, and fresh paint – both inside and out.
“There are still a few tiny things left to be completed but the courts were playable on Monday (16 January),” said club secretary Susan Smith.
Ms Smith said the two new synthetic courts, which replaced two tired en tout cas courts, would be a welcome relief to the club’s older members.
“These are synthetic with sand and will be much easier on their joints,” Ms Smith said.
“It’s just not such a strain, and you don’t have to water them so it’s less maintenance.”
Ms Smith estimated the club’s courts had not seen any significant upgrades since the 1950s.
The new $190,000 upgrade project also features improved lighting, making night tennis even more of an attraction for new members.
The State Government, Yarra Ranges Council and the Bendigo Bank combined to provide the funding.
The new facilities will be officially unveiled by Sport and Recreation Minister Hugh Delahunty on 21 February.
Mount Evelyn Tennis Club is always on the lookout for new members. For further information, call Susan Smith on 9735 5086.
