THE Mount Evelyn and Lilydale RSL clubs have decided to undertake a collaborative approach towards marking this year’s Anzac Centenary.
In a unique commemorative project, the clubs have divided the local war memorials between them and will honour the local soldiers who died during World War I.
Over the next four years, on the anniversary of the listed soldiers’ death in action, a wreath will be laid at the local memorial that remembers them.
For the floral tribute list, Mount Evelyn RSL will cover the Montrose, Mount Evelyn and Wandin memorials.
While Lilydale RSL will cover the Mooroolbark, Lilydale and Coldstream memorials.
Lilydale RSL president Don Parsons said it was an apt way to remember those in our region who served.
“We believe this is a great way to get the community involved in the centenary anniversary,” he said.
“If we lay a wreath on the anniversary of their death, it is an apt way to honour their memory.
“We’re hoping the inclusion of schools and local dignitaries will give their memory added significance,” he said.
Mr Parsons said federal, state and local parliamentarians have been secured for a special anniversary on 3 May at Lilydale Lawn Cemetery.
This event, in particular, will honour the memory of Lieutenant Commander RN, DSC, Geoffrey Haggard.
Mr Parsons is hoping local schools and community groups will get behind this occasion, too.
This 25 April will mark the 100th year since the first campaign in World War I that led to major casualties for Australian and New Zealand Forces.
More broadly, Anzac Day commemorates all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations.
