A NATIONAL Youth Week event over the weekend will hope to draw young people from around the Yarra Ranges in for inspiring speeches – and free music – at the Mooroolbark Community Centre.

From 10am to 2pm on Sunday 17 April, the community centre will host the Ascend: Youth Revolution event, organised and run by Yarra Ranges Council’s Youth Reference Group.

Youth worker Lauren Eudey said the group – made up of seven Yarra Ranges residents aged between 15 and 24 – planned the event and organised its funding through a Victorian Government grant.

Amnesty International’s Lucy Kenny will speak at the event about creating social change, while Nick Bracks will take to the stage to tell his story of living with anxiety and depression.

Ms Eudey said a free barbecue would be held at the event, with live music performed by December Rush and One More Weekend over the day.

She said the event had been in the works since late last year, with the reference group members planning the day and contacting the speakers to come out.

The event, Ms Eudey said, was about “creating opportunities for young people to be inspired”, and about making changes in their communities.

Entry to the event at the Mooroolbark Community Centre, at 125 Brice Avenue, is free.
